B.C. STOP DWI Coordinator Invited to MADD Conference
BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County STOP-DWI Coordinator Jim May has been invited by Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to participate in a conference in New York City. The Law Enforcement Leadership Summit will take place February 16th and 17th.
The focus of the summit is the alarming number of DWI related fatalities on our nation’s highways. In 2004, 42,636 people were killed in traffic accidents in America. Of that number, 16,694, or 39%, were killed in alcohol related crashes. That is an average of one life lost every half-hour.
May will be joining key law enforcement representatives, MADD executives, government officials and traffic safety specialists in discussing how states and local governments can work more effectively to turn this trend around.
Jim May has served as Broome County’s STOP-DWI Coordinator for 22 years. He currently serves as Chairman of the New York State STOP-DWI Coordinators Association. He has been a member of the Association’s Executive Committee, he has served as its Vice-Chair and he has also served as its Legislative Chairman.
His awards include the Richard Novelli Award which recognizes outstanding education programs in New York State(only two time recipient), the Honorable William Smith Award for contributions to statewide STOP-DWI efforts(only two time recipient), the New York State Safe and Sober STOP-DWI Coordinator Service to Law Enforcement Award and the National Commission Against Drunk Driving Award for Government Leadership.
STOP-DWI stands for "Special Traffic Options Program for Driving While Intoxicated". The STOP-DWI Program was enacted by the State Legislature in 1981 for the purposes of empowering county governments to coordinate local efforts to reduce alcohol and other drug-related traffic crashes within the context of a comprehensive and financially self-sustaining alcohol and highway safety program.
