West Nile Virus Update for Broome County
Recent reports have confirmed five birds testing positive for West Nile virus in Rockland County and Bergen County, New Jersey. "These findings are not surprising, states Charles H. Wolford, Broome County Public Health Director, given the large numbers of dead birds which were present in areas affected during last year's West Nile virus outbreak." Mr. Wolford said residents should not be alarmed but stay informed, take steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes by removing breeding habitats on their property, and report dead bird sightings to the Broome County Health Department at 607.778.2887.
Broome County is taking measures outlined in the New York State West Nile virus response plan. Local contingency planning efforts include reviewing historical records on mosquito type and location in Broome County, enhanced human surveillance and monitoring of the area bird population for the presence of West Nile virus. As of June 28, 2000, the Broome County Health Department has sent four dead birds to the State Laboratory for testing. At this time, results have been received for one crow. The laboratory confirmed a negative result for West Nile virus.
Birds are not the source of West Nile virus, but rather, serve as its reservoir, after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The Northern House Mosquito, or Culex Pipiens, is the species most closely associated with transmission of West Nile virus. To minimize the possibility of mosquito bites, residents should replace or repair broken window and door screens and eliminate stagnant water where Culex Pipiens breed:
Residents with questions about West Nile virus, or reports of dead birds should contact the Broome County Health Department Environmental Health Services at 607.778.2887. Together, Broome County can FIGHT THE BITE!
