Technology Improvements at the Greater Binghamton Airport
Enhancements further develop Customer Services

BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala announces numerous technological improvements have recently been implemented at the Greater Binghamton Airport that will drastically improve passenger services.

One of the more exciting developments has the Airport working with two of the country's largest cell phone companies to establish significantly improved wireless telephone coverage. To improve the signal strength available at BGM, both Nextel Wireless and Verizon Wireless have installed cell phone signal improvement equipment. Initial tests of this equipment have indicated a considerably improved signal exists for the thousands of airport customers who subscribe to either of these two companies. Additional wireless service improvements for the airport are expected to be announced in the near future.

The Greater Binghamton Airport has improved its Wireless Internet service capabilities in the passenger terminal building as well. With this enhancement, the signal for Wireless Internet service has been expanded. Service now extends to the majority of the passenger terminal building's public areas, including the business center, restaurant and departure lounge. This free service gives passengers, with properly equipped computers, the opportunity to check e-mail and retrieve information from the Internet - all while they wait for their flight.

Finally, the airport's web site, which is found at www.binghamtonairport.com, or www.gobroomecounty.com has been updated and is now offering several new services. The airport worked in conjunction with the Broome County Department of Information Technology to begin offering current airline and weather information that can be accessed by web enabled cell phones. With this technology, customers with web enabled cell phones or other Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) devices are able to retrieve information on flight departure times or weather conditions by visiting Broome County's WAP address found at http://gobcwap.com.

"We are pleased to offer the travelers of our region not only the conveniences that they expect in our high-tech world, but also some cutting edge services such as the WAP program," said Broome County Executive Fiala. "It is these types of services that solidify the Greater Binghamton Airport as a top regional transportation facility.

Currently, the Greater Binghamton Airport offers service from 4 of the nation's 7 largest airlines with 34 flights per day (approximately 60% of these flights utilize new regional jet aircraft) providing convenient service to most domestic and international destinations. The airlines currently serving the Greater Binghamton area include Delta Connection, Northwest Airlink, United Express and US Airways Express. From these airlines, non-stop service is available to Cincinnati, Detroit, Washington DC, and Philadelphia, respectively.
