Broome County Employees Dig Deep for Red Cross
BINGHAMTON, NY - More than two weeks ago, Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala asked Broome County employees to look deep into their hearts and dig deep into their pockets to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The employees responded in a big way. Today, Executive Fiala handed over nearly $8,500 to Cindy Gordineer, Executive Director of the Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross.
"I'm absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity of our Broome County employees," said Fiala. "We truly have some of the most thoughtful and generous employees and I'm very proud of all that we were able to do for the victims of Hurricane Katrina."
"Broome County was the first to step forward with an employee campaign drive and we are truly grateful for that," said Gordineer. "The County Executive challenged other governments, businesses and schools to do the same. They did and we are still seeing the results of those fund drives."
The campaign drive was organized by each Broome County Department Head. In some cases, the departments came up with creative ways to raise money. For example, the Information Technology Department produced and sold a cookbook. That effort alone raised more than $1,300.
