Volunteers Needed For 2005 Riverbank Cleanup

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Broome County Environmental Management Council (EMC) needs energetic captains and crews to register for the 20th annual Broome County Riverbank Clean Up. The event is Saturday, October 8, 2005, rain or shine from 9 a.m. until 12 noon, at various locations along the Susquehanna, Chenango and Tioughnioga rivers and their many tributaries in Broome County.

Last year, nearly 250 volunteers, comprising 22 groups, retrieved over 6,000 pounds of garbage, illegally dumped trash, and flood carried debris at 28 different sites along waterways. The Broome County EMC is a registered participant in the International River and Coastal Clean Up sponsored in New York State by the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society and internationally by the Ocean Conservancy.

The EMC is Broome County's citizen advisory group to the government on environmental matters and the focal point for public participation in local government decisions that affect the County's environment.
