Broome County STOP-DWI Coordinator Honored For Contributions To STOP-DWI Efforts In New York State
BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County STOP-DWI Coordinator, James May has been awarded the 2003 Senator William T. Smith Award for his outstanding contributions to the STOP-DWI effort in New York State. The award was presented to Mr. May by his peers at the annual New York State Highway Safety Conference held in Lake Placid, NY October 27th - 29th.
Senator William T. Smith is a former New York State Senator (Big Flats) who was the chief architect and sponsor of the landmark STOP-DWI legislation. The award given annually in his name recognizes an individual for his or her outstanding dedication and contribution to the STOP-DWI effort in New York State. Jim May is the first two-time recipient of the award, having received the recognition in 1994.
" I am very honored to receive this recognition, but more importantly I am grateful for the consideration and cooperation I am afforded from everyone I work with from across New York State to help make our highways safer," said Broome County STOP-DWI Coordinator, James May.
Denise Cashmere, Schenectady County STOP-DWI Coordinator and chairperson of the New York State STOP-DWI Association said, "Jim May is most deserving of this unprecedented second award from his colleagues in STOP-DWI. I have worked with Jim for twenty years and his goal has always been to run a high-profile effective county STOP-DWI program; with this award we recognize his success."
"As Legislative Counsel to the STOP-DWI Coordinators Association for the past 11 years, I was delighted to learn that Jim May had received the Senator William T. Smith Award for 2003. Jim's relentless commitment to reducing the incidence of alcohol and other drug-related fatalities has resulted in dramatic reductions in alcohol-related traffic crashes throughout the region. The broad range of creative and innovative endeavors that have marked Jim's tenure has made the Broome County STOP-DWI Program a model for the rest of the state," said Christopher Cernik, STOP-DWI Association Counsel. Mr. Cernik went on to say that, "Jim's tireless leadership among the state's STOP-DWI Coordinators has been a significant factor in the realization of Senator's Smith's vision for a safer New York."
In presenting this year's Senator Smith Award Drusilla Malavase, Ontario County STOP-DWI Coordinator and the 2002 recipient cited the many reasons why Jim deserved this year's award, "Jim is yearly one of the Associations most valuable assets, he consistently shows an unselfish attitude in all of his work. He is the "master" when it comes to public information and education and this year was no different. This presentation is unprecedented, as Jim is the first repeat winner of this award, which was first given in 1986."
