County Executive Kicks Off Twelfth Annual STOP-DWI Holiday Classic At The Charlie Howland Memorial Luncheon
Boy's Basketball Tournament To Take Place December26-29th, 2003
BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive, Jeffrey P. Kraham joined New York State Assemblyman, Robert Warner, Binghamton City School District Officials, tournament sponsors and local high school basketball teams to kick off the 12th Annual STOP-DWI Holiday Classic at a news conference and luncheon today.
Mr. Kraham commended the many sponsors, local school districts and community organizations for their continued support of the nationally recognized high school sporting event.
"The Broome County STOP-DWI Holiday Classic is a fun and innovative way to educate our youth and heighten public awareness about the consequences of drunk driving," said Broome County Executive Jeff Kraham. "Each year Broome County, local businesses and local school districts commit themselves to preventing drunk driving in our community while providing a premier sporting event for high school athletes to participate in," said Kraham.
Broome County STOP-DWI Coordinator, James May and Tournament Director, Richard Westfall announced plans for this year's STOP-DWI Holiday Classic. The annual tournament will showcase top teams from Ohio, Florida, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., and New York as well as local teams from Broome and Tioga Counties.
For the 5th consecutive year, Mr. Kraham and tournament officials paid tribute to the late Charlie Howland, a widely respected former high school basketball coach who was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident in 1998. In recognition of the contribution that Mr. Howland made to the community, the kick off media and sports luncheon has been named "The Charlie Howland Memorial Luncheon".
