BINGHAMTON, NY - Clayton Avenue Elementary in Vestal and Calvin Coolidge Elementary in Binghamton will be joining schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 3, 2007.
A total of approximately 100 students between the two schools will be walking and biking to school on Wednesday along with parents, teachers, and community leaders. Steps to a Healthier New York, the Broome County Traffic Safety Program and United Health Services are among the many organizations promoting this event.
The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Calvin Coolidge and 8:15 a.m. at Clayton Avenue with kids, parents, law enforcement and community leaders walking and biking together in honor of this special event. Other special activities associated with the walk include a free, healthy breakfast to all participants and an opportunity to learn about bike and pedestrian safety as well as the importance of exercising and eating healthy.
In the U.S., International Walk to School Day is expected to include 5,000 schools from all 50 states. Walkers and bikers from the U.S. will join children and adults in 40 countries around the world.
Walk to School events work to create safe routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.
