Broome County Executive and Historian Receive Records Management Award
BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Barbara Fiala and Historian Gerald Smith were awarded an Annual Records Management Award from Regional Advisory Committee of the New York State (NYS) Archives. This year's category was historical records. The committee's attention was drawn to Broome County following the Bicentennial celebration which included a host of events that celebrated the area's history. The records management award will be presented to County Executive, Barbara J. Fiala and Historian, Gerald Smith by the NYS Regional Representative for Region 6.
“We are thankful for the recognition of the work that went into Broome County's bicentennial celebration,” exclaimed, Executive Barbara Fiala. “Our community's rich history will continue to be well documented so that future generations have the privilege and ability to reflect upon our area's proud development.”
Each nominated community is studied and then voted upon by the Committee Chairs and NYS Archives Regional Representative for the records management award. Local governments are judged upon their records management based on the seven attributes of an effective records management program. They include: 1. creating needed records, and none that are not, 2.retaining records needed as essential evidence and few obsolete records 3.record storage - especially historical records - safely and securely, 4.efficient access and retrieval systems, 5.promoting the use of archival records as a community resource, 6.solid policies and procedures for records management.
“Based on all the effort & hard work the County Executive, Gerry Smith and staff contributed to Bicentennial events such as the ball, time capsule, parade and poster contest, Broome County was at the top of the nominees list,” shared Susan DiBenedetto, Broome County Records Manager.
