Hooper Road Bridge Open

*** Update: The Bridge Will be Open to Traffic Tomorrow Morning
This afternoon's dry weather conditions have provided crews the ability to proceed with striping. The bridge is on schedule to be open for the commute to work tomorrow morning.

Hooper Road Bridge OpenBINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Commissioner of Public Works Henry Weissmann was joined by Town of Union Supervisor John Bernardo and Jack Williams, Regional Director for the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) this morning for a 10:30am news conference to discuss the re-opening of Hooper Road in the Town of Union. The bridge is ready to be re-opened to traffic both north and southbound once lane striping is completed; current wet weather is not allowing crews to finish lining the roadway.

“We would like to thank residents for their patience and use of alternate routes throughout construction, allowing for the project to move ahead of schedule,” stated Henry Weissmann, Broome County Commissioner of Public Works. “Current weather conditions are not allowing for the striping to be completed, but if there is a window of dry weather, crews will complete lanes and the road will open.”

Officials discussed the continued changes in traffic flow that drivers will experience once the bridge is re- opened. The westbound ramp onto NYS 17c will remain closed. The traffic signal that was added to 17c will remain, continuing the current traffic pattern of allowing a left hand turn onto 17c/Main St from Hooper Road.

“We (NYSDOT) will be evaluating the traffic calming of the signal on 17c and determining whether or not it contributes to slowing traffic,” commented Jack Williams, Regional Director NYSDOT.

Work on this project began in the late spring 2007 and continued throughout the summer into the winter months. This spring, crews will continue construction on the bridge's ramps. The total project is scheduled for completion next August and will cost 3.3 million dollars.
